Director of Cloud Nine, Peter Mortimer is currently writing a new play
based on the life of North Shields painter Victor Noble Rainbird. This
will be a full length play plotting Rainbird’s journey as a talented
painter who gained a scholarship to the Royal Academy, served in the
first World War and later became an alcoholic selling his paintings for
a drink in the pubs of North Shields. The play moves between the world
of Rainbird and modern-day Tyneside. The painter died in 1936 and was
buried in a pauper’s grave. This production also hopes to embrace work
in schools and music inspired by the painter's work.
Performances of the play are planned for Spring 2018, and will mark Cloud Nine’s anniversary. We are looking to stage more celebrations during the year. More later.
are delighted to be performing the play at the recently revamped
Exchange Theatre in North Shields, which after being dark for some
times is now re-establishing itself (along with the adjoining Beldon's
Bar & smaller performance space) as a cultural centre in the town.
